Announcing 2019 Spring paid internship opportunities for undergraduate STEM students

The Office of Science / U.S. Department of Energy is pleased to announce paid internship opportunities for undergraduate students majoring in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for the Spring of 2019. The application system for the 2019 Spring Term Community College Internships (CCI) program is currently open, with all applications due by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Oct. 9, 2018.

The Community College Internships (CCI) program places community college students as paid interns in technological activities at DOE national laboratories, working under the supervision of a laboratory technician or researcher. Appointments are for 10 weeks during the Spring term, are open to U.S. Citizens and U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents, include a weekly stipend, reimbursement for one round trip domestic travel to the participant’s host DOE laboratory and possibilities for a housing allowance. More than 100 internships are sponsored annually.

Learn more about industrial technologies at upcoming Free Fab Fridays

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Area residents interested in learning more about industrial technologies are invited to attend Free Fab Fridays at the Greater Ozarks Center for Advanced Technology (GOCAT), 125 N. Howell Ave., in West Plains.

Sponsored by Missouri State University-West Plains and West Plains R-7 School District's South Central Career Center, the event is designed to give those attending an overview of the fundamentals of machining, industrial controls, hydraulics, pneumatics and 3D printing, organizers said.

Sessions are set for 10 a.m. to noon on March 23 and April 6, 13, 20 and 27. Topics for each session are:

• March 23 – Machining I will cover the fundamental concepts of manual milling;
• April 6 – Machining II will cover the fundamental concepts of automated manufacturing;
• April 13 – Industrial Controls will cover fundamental concepts of electronics and how they are used in industry; also will cover the concept of construction and operation of motors, generators and electronic control circuits;
• April 20 – Hydraulics/Pneumatics will cover the concepts of mechanical and fluid power systems;
• April 27 – 3D Printing will cover the concepts of this new emerging technology and how it is used to create almost anything.

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Area residents interested in learning more about energy technologies are invited to attend Free Fab Fridays at the Greater Ozarks Center for Advanced Technology (GOCAT), 125 N. Howell Ave., in West Plains.

Sponsored by Missouri State University-West Plains and West Plains R-7 School District's South Central Career Center, the event is designed to give those attending an overview of alternative energy sources, such as biofuels (using wood gasification to make electricity), solar (using the sun to generate electricity) and wind (using wind to generate power), and how they all work together to provide renewable resources for energy, organizers said.

Sessions are set for 10 a.m. to noon on Feb. 9, 16 and 23 and March 2. The Feb. 9 session will focus on biofuels, the Feb. 16 session on solar energy, and the Feb. 23 session on wind power. The last session will show how they work together, organizers said.

Organizers also pointed out GOCAT was recently approved as “Fab Lab” by the Fab Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that emerged from Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Center for Bits & Atoms Fab Lab Program. The foundation's mission is to provide access to the tools, the knowledge and the financial means to educate, innovate and invent using technology and digital fabrication to allow anyone to make (almost) anything, and thereby creating opportunities to improve lives and livelihoods around the world, according to the foundation's website.
